R-12
Principal’s Report
It was wonderful news to find out that Isaac McInness was the first person ever to receive the 2025 Blind Australian of the Year Youth Award.

Isaac is a remarkable young man who has taken everything in his stride! It’s interesting to note that he would love to be a Ski Instructor or Ski Ranger/Rescue person when he leaves school. This might have something to do with the experience he had on an EFS Ski trip where he learnt to ski and actually skied down a Blue Run. Isaac was presented with a Lions Courage Medallion Award and the highest individual award for the Lions Courage Award on Tuesday evening by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, at Government House in Adelaide.

Such achievements remind us that our students are doing remarkable things, academically, personally and in the broader community. This Newsletter, Facebook and Instagram as well as the local paper The Southern Argus publish our student success stories weekly.
We are approaching that time of year when we will be holding Graduation Ceremonies, Concerts and Assemblies to celebrate the success and achievement of all our students R-12 across all 5 Campuses. I hope to see you there!
The Annual R-6 and 7-12 Magazines have gone to the printers, and they are spectacular. The countless number of photos and students engaged in a wide variety of learning activities continues to amaze me. I am glad I never had to make the final selection of what went in to the final product.
Please take the time to read all of the newsletter articles from each campus as they are testimony to why this school is regarded as one of the highest performing schools in the state.

EFS Unites to Create ‘Beautiful Work’
In a remarkable display of unity and creativity, all five EFS campuses came together on Thursday, 23 October, at the 7–12 Campus oval to form a whole R–12 school photo in the shape of the EFS logo.
What began as an ambitious idea from Year 9 students Amy and Kate—who discovered a 1925 Strathalbyn High School photo in the library and proposed recreating it in 2025 to celebrate 100 years of EFS history—grew into a powerful example of collaboration, learner agency, and community spirit. It truly embodied what we call “beautiful work.”

Working alongside a team of dedicated staff, Amy and Kate led the project from concept to completion. It was inspiring to see students from every campus gather and carefully take their places on the oval to form the EFS logo. Once everyone was in position, a drone captured breathtaking aerial images and footage. Throughout the process, students showed patience, respect, and teamwork—creating a moment that will be remembered for years to come.

We were also delighted to welcome community members with connections to the original 1925 photo. Their presence added a special touch, bridging EFS’s proud history with its vibrant present.

Congratulations to Amy and Kate for bringing this vision to life—we are incredibly proud.

Head of Campus Report

Welcome back to Term 4, our final term for the 2025 school year. This term promises to be one of energy and excitement, with a vibrant calendar of activities and a strong focus on academic rigour. Students will engage in new learning opportunities while also preparing for the highly anticipated Talent Show and celebrating the milestone of the Year 6 Graduation. We look forward to welcoming visiting classes to Bush School, participating in the Step Up Day, and sharing the experience of our much-anticipated campus end-of-year excursion. The term is sure to pass quickly, and we remain committed to ensuring consistent routines and high-quality learning experiences in every classroom. Our core school values—Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Teamwork—will continue to underpin all that we do, guiding both learning and behaviour. We are also delighted to welcome our 2026 Reception students for their transition visits and look forward to getting to know each of them as they begin to form new friendships and connections within our school community.
Regards,
Rebekah Fahey
Head of Campus
2026 Receptions
We were delighted to welcome our 2026 Reception students—Bobby, Hunter, Maggie, Flora, and Liliana—during their first school transition visit last week. The morning in Hakea class was thoughtfully facilitated by Kiera, their future class teacher, who warmly greeted the new students and their families. She prepared a variety of engaging activities designed to support a smooth and positive transition into school life. Our older students exemplified inclusivity, ensuring that each new Reception felt comfortable and valued within the class community. Together, all students participated in an inquiry-based lesson on the theme of ‘Farms’. After enjoying a captivating farm-themed picture book, the children discussed the essential elements required on a farm and worked collaboratively to construct their own farms using classroom resources. The resulting designs were both creative and impressive. It was truly heart-warming to witness the genuine camaraderie and teamwork displayed by all students throughout the morning.

Cultural Studies
This term in Cultural Studies, with a focus on First Nations perspectives, students will be exploring the significance and traditions surrounding traditional weapons and tools. Through this inquiry, they will deepen their understanding of First Nations culture, including the historical and cultural context of these implements. As part of their learning, students have been thoughtfully designing their own boomerangs, incorporating meaningful symbols and Australian animals into their designs. They will continue this creative process by painting their wooden boomerangs, further enhancing their appreciation and respect for First Nations artistry and heritage.

Assembly
In Week 10 of Term 3, the Acacia class capably led the final assembly for the term. The students demonstrated excellent organisation and presentation skills in both planning and facilitating this event. Learners from both classes showcased a diverse range of work, highlighting their studies in poetry, creative writing, visual arts, and their experiences at Bush School. During the assembly, certificates were awarded to Brody, Aviana, Leah, and Kieran in recognition of their achievements. The certificates are aligned with our Global Competencies, with the focus for Semester 2 encompassing creativity, collaboration, communication, and citizenship.

Acacia Garden Beds
The Acacia class, in collaboration with their teacher Michael, has been diligently engaged in revitalising the campus garden beds. As part of this project, students researched which plants would be most suitable for cultivation at this time of year, before carefully planting seeds. The process began with the preparation of the garden beds, which involved removing old plants and weeds, as well as enriching the soil with fresh potting mix and fertiliser. Under attentive care, the seeds were nurtured and monitored as they germinated, prior to being transplanted into the newly prepared beds. The students have consistently maintained the gardens and are now observing the healthy growth of their plants. There is eager anticipation as they look forward to utilising the fresh produce from the garden in future cooking activities.

Family Bush School Day
We concluded another exceptional term of Bush School by welcoming our families to participate in this special day. Students showcased their inventive and imaginative "Weird and Unusual Creatures" to both their families and peers, culminating a term-long effort in their Creation Projects. Each student confidently shared their knowledge and understanding of the animal they had selected and constructed, demonstrating both initiative and creativity. During lunchtime, we gathered around the campfire to prepare toasted sandwiches and enjoy meaningful conversations together. The day concluded with our parents actively participating in Play and Learn activities, where they enthusiastically joined in the games and delighted in outsmarting the students. It is truly a privilege to invite our families to experience the distinctive and enriching Bush School environment each term, celebrating the unique learning experiences we provide.

CREATIVITY HOUR
Every Tuesday both classes get together for an hour to work on a creative project. We look at the 6 C's and how they can be used to complete different challenges. The students have just finished off our weather units. Students had to research and create a diorama of their weather type. They had to look at what causes it and ways it affects humans. They then presented them to the school in the form of news weather alert.

MILANG CAMPUS
Cnr Cox and Rivers Street, Milang SA 5256 Ph: 8536 2455
Head of Campus Report

The end of Term 3 was an eventful and rewarding time for students and staff at the Milang Campus. Together, we celebrated a successful whole-campus camp at Arbury Park, followed by our highly anticipated annual Spring Concert and Art Exhibition. These events offer our students fantastic opportunities to step outside their everyday experiences, explore new skills, and showcase their talents in drama and music to a live audience.
We are incredibly grateful to the wonderful Milang community for its ongoing support of our Spring Concert. This historical event is always well attended—not only by parents, grandparents, and siblings but also by family friends and community members. The positive feedback we have received is heartening and speaks volumes about the learning that is taking place at Milang.
Term 4 promises to be a busy and exciting time at the Milang Campus. We are preparing to transition our Year 6 students to high school, while also welcoming our 2026 Reception students as they move from Kindergarten into the next stage of their learning journey with us.
Our staff will also be engaged in analysing the results from last term’s progressive assessment testing. These insights will play a vital role in helping us review and refine our intervention and learning programs as we plan for next year.
We are looking forward to the many exciting opportunities Term 4 will bring for our students and school community

Playgroup

Junior Primary Learning
The students had such a wonderful time at camp at the Mud Kitchen and garden activity. We were able to purchase one and have it set up so playgroup kids can also make use of it.

Upper Primary Learning
The Upper Primary class has been collaborating with the Port Milang Museum to design a brochure that showcases the museum’s offerings to both the local community and visitors to Milang. As part of this project, students interviewed Allan McInnes and Dianne Potter from the museum to identify the key information to include in the brochure.
Using Canva, a graphic design platform, the students worked creatively to produce a range of brochure designs. The completed brochures have now been shared with the Port Milang Museum, which will review them and decide which one to use as their new official brochure. This partnership has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to develop real-world skills while contributing to the broader community.

In maths on Fridays, we have been enjoying doing some fluency lessons to help us keep up our basic maths skills.
One of our recent lessons involved us putting our detective hats on to solve a crime!
Using the skills and knowledge we have used in our Perimeter and Area unit, students had to work together to solve various questions about area and perimeter to hunt down clues and solve the case of the school's missing cupcakes mystery!

Bonnie

Assembly
Well done to all our award winners from end of Term 3 and start of Term 4.
Special mention to Memphis who was our Term 3 VIP winner. Well done Memphis for always showing our school values.

Arbury Park Camp
In Week 9, students from Reception to Year 6 embarked on an exciting three-day camp at Arbury Park. The unpredictable weather treated us to all four seasons, but nothing could dampen our spirits. Among the many highlights were the engaging Aboriginal education session and campfire with Trent Hill, the invigorating walk up Mount George, and the creative construction of a nature play village.
By the end of the camp, everyone was tired but filled with a sense of accomplishment, having taken part in such a fantastic outdoor learning opportunity. It was an experience to remember and one that showcased the resilience and enthusiasm of our students.

Spring Concert and Art Exhibition
The Spring Concert was a celebration of creativity and talent, featuring drama productions of Wombat Stew and Robin Hood and the Miserable Marriage. Students impressed the audience with lively dance performances to Shiver Me Timbers and We’re All in This Together, while the whole-campus choir delighted everyone with their rendition of The Purple People Eater.
The Art Show was another resounding success, attracting wonderful feedback from attendees. It was a vibrant showcase of our students’ artistic achievements and a reflection of the creativity fostered within our school community.

Sports Day 2025
Congratulations to everyone on another incredible Sports Day — a day filled with energy, teamwork, and community spirit! Our students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, cheering each other on and giving their all in every event. From hurdles and long jump to tug-of-war and relays, every moment reflected their determination, effort, and pride in their teams.
A huge thank you to our students, teachers, and canteen team for making the day such a success, and to our parents and community members for their enthusiastic support. Special thanks go to Mr S, Ms Frost, and Donna for their exceptional coordination and to the 7–12 PE team and BBQ crew for lending their support.
After a 12-year break, McLean proudly claimed the Rose Ball Trophy, and congratulations to Davidson for taking home the Spirit Cup!

Enterprise Events
Pink Day
Congratulations to Room 7 for the success of their Enterprise project, Pink Day, held in honour of Lyndall. Students led the day with enthusiasm and compassion, raising an incredible $1,258 to support Breast Cancer nurses through donations and sales. What an inspiring effort — a wonderful example of students leading with heart and purpose.

Fishing
A passionate group of young anglers joined Mr Bilney for a day at the Angus River as part of their project focused on removing carp from local waterways. While the fish weren’t biting, the group’s spirits remained high — proudly returning to school with their most unusual “catch” of the day: a dog lead!

Casual Clothes Day
Our next whole school Casual Clothes Day will support a range of student-led Enterprise initiatives, raising funds for diverse causes — from purchasing dog food for animal shelters to buying a popcorn machine for classroom use.
All Enterprise projects will be showcased through a virtual gallery, providing students with an opportunity to reflect on their learning and celebrate their achievements.
Reception Transition and 2026 Enrolments
Our 45+ new Receptions for 2026 have begun their transition visits and are already making new friends and settling in beautifully. Their final visit will be Step Up Day on Thursday, 5th December when they’ll meet their 2026 teachers and classmates.
As we prepare for next year, we also acknowledge and celebrate staff changes:
- Lyndall Codlin will be moving to our Ashbourne campus,
 - Ben Smith is heading to Alberton Primary School
 - Ailsa Green and Cara Eastwood will begin well-deserved retirements
 - Demi Alcorn will be welcoming baby number two!

We also look forward to seeing some old faces returning and welcoming new staff in 2026 — our teaching team remains caring, student-centred, and deeply committed to learning and wellbeing.
If your family will not be returning to Eastern Fleurieu School in 2026, please let the school know in writing or by email as soon as possible, as this information helps us finalise class structures and staffing.
Year 6 Graduation
We’re excited to celebrate our Year 6 students at their Graduation Evening on Tuesday, 10th December.
Families are reminded to complete the RSVP link included in the invitation to help us finalise seating and catering.
It’s always a special evening of reflection and celebration — we can’t wait to share this milestone with our students and families.

What Has Room 1 Been Up To?
Poetry
In Room 1, students have been immersed in the world of poetry during our writing lessons. Recently, we explored the fascinating technique of blackout poetry. Using pages from old books, students creatively selected words and phrases, blocking out the rest to reveal unique poems hidden within the text.

Science
In Science, our focus has shifted to electrical circuits. Students are investigating how circuits are constructed and how key components such as switches, outputs (light bulbs, buzzers, and fans), conductors, and power sources, work together to allow electricity to flow. Through hands on activities and class discussions, students are developing an understanding of the importance and function of each part, as well as the difference between open and closed circuits.

Team 21s Term 4 News
Nature and Nurture Festival
Team 21 have had a busy start to Term 4. In Week 2 we enjoyed a visit over to the high school for the Year 10s and 11s Nature and Nurture Festival. The students participated in a range of nature play and mindfulness activities. It was great to see how engaged the children were when participating in each activity. Thank you for such a fun and enjoyable morning Year 10s and 11s.

Deep Learning
In Deep Learning we have been looking at the competency Collaboration. The students have been working in different groups to complete a range of challenges. They are given 20 minutes to complete each challenge and at the end they complete a self-assessment on their participation and how well they feel they worked in the group. We have had some amazing creations over the past couple of weeks and honest reflections as well.

Regards,

Regards,
Student Led Learning with Room 4
For part of our extra-curricular opportunities, some students in Room 4 have participating in Student Led Learning. We do this on Wednesdays whilst some students are attending Choir and Dance Troupe. This allows these students to engage in "teaching" a lesson, to the rest of their classmates. They choose a topic on their interest, have to plan the lesson in detail, prepare the resources, deliver the lesson they complete a reflection.
So far, we have had students deliver lessons on-
- Ball games (including with a Year 2/3 Buddy class)
 - Universal Origami
 - Monster Ball
 - Cooking pancakes
 - Sports skills
 - Canva - how to use it

We'll also have a few new experiences for this term that are almost finished, including a Minecraft survival challenge, Vision boards, Trivia via kahoot, Rugby and Drawing.
Sustainability Club
They have also been participating with Donna as part of Sustainability Club. This included spending a few weeks supporting recycling around the school and an afternoon of tree planting in Tungaree. Thanks to Donna for an amazing opportunity!

Nature and Nurture with Room 30
Nature and Nurture with Room 30
On Monday, 20th October Room 30 participated in a Nature and Nurture Festival at the 7-12 Campus. It was run by the Year 10 and 11 Child Studies classes. The students had planned and set up Nature play and Mindfulness activities for the classes to rotate through.
Room 30 thoroughly enjoyed their time and were involved in being nature detectives, making magic potions, making butterfly wings and flower pictures as well as making stress balls, mindfulness painting and jellyfish breathing.
It was an awesome experience and so lovely to observe the older students working with the Room 30 students.

Sports Day Write Up
On Friday, 19th September 2025 Eastern Fleurieu school Strathalbyn R-6 had Sports Day.
The day was brilliant as all the staff and students had a great day and the weather was perfect. It was very well organised by Mr S and Donna P and it was great seeing all the students encouraging each other and smiling all day long.
Congratulations to McLean for winning the day and Davidson for winning the Spirit Cup.
We think the Spirit Cup is much more than having the win because it means having fun, never giving up and cheering other teammates on it also shows our school values.
Some of the events we had this year were high jump, long jump, hurdles, spoke and sponge relay. A new event for our school this year was the cornhole relay and the Tungaree obstacle course. At the end of the day we had the teacher, house captains and SSO sprints, tug of war, sprints and the whole school relay. The SSOs were the fastest in the relay and took out the win. We'd like to thank the school captains for leading our war cries and our teams. We can’t wait for 2026 Sports day.

Junior Primary Outdoor Ed
Welcome back to Term 4. Junior Primary Outdoor Education continues to be a fun and exciting learning opportunity for the students. We have started off the term with “MY KITCHEN RULES” The students worked collaboratively in small groups to create a restaurant and 3 meals. Each group was given a small amount of water and a box of ingredients to work their magic. They could use ingredients from the wild pantry in Tungaree. The students came up with wild menus full of lots of interesting flavours. They had to sell their restaurant and menu to the judges, who had to decide the winner of the competition. It was very tough for the judges.

Head of Campus Report

As we move towards the final stages of another school year, I am delighted to share a selection of recent highlights and upcoming events within our vibrant school community.
Teaching and Learning Highlights
Our commitment to fostering learner agency and excellence is evident in the way teachers and students are learning and growing together. Staff are engaging deeply with the new South Australian Curriculum, evolving our practices to better meet the needs of our students. At the same time, our students have taken an active role in shaping their own learning, recently presenting their work to education leaders at significant events such as the SACE Conference and the Learning Expeditions showcase. These experiences not only empower students to share their voices, but also reflect our shared journey—teachers and students working as partners to design future-focused learning programs. Our ongoing focus on the ‘Effective Learner’ area of impact continues to strengthen this partnership, ensuring students are more actively involved in shaping their educational journey as we prepare for 2026 and beyond.

Student Leadership and Initiatives
Last week we held the House Shield celebration assembly, enthusiastically led by our student leadership team. Together, we recognised outstanding contributors across our community through the River Run Awards, House Champion announcements and the formal appointment of our new House Captains. A special farewell was extended to the graduating class of 2025.
For those still in suspense, I am pleased to announce that Sturt House—The Green Machine—emerged victorious and claimed the coveted House Shield for 2025!
A further highlight this term was our 100-Year Whole School Photo recreation. If you have not yet seen the result, I encourage you to visit our social media pages for a glance. Our sincere thanks go to Year 9 students, Kate and Amy, whose initiative, determination, and professionalism brought this project to life. Their dedication is truly commendable.

Our uniform committee has reconvened to undertake a comprehensive review. Student representatives on the committee will soon be seeking feedback about our current uniform and potential new items. This collaborative process will help us make informed decisions about updates and enhancements, with the goal of improving student comfort and achieving greater uniform compliance across all year levels.
Still to come…
Term 4 is always a time of transition and celebration. As we prepare to farewell our class of 2025, we also look forward to welcoming our incoming Year 7 students for 2026. A range of transition events is planned for the coming weeks, including a morning tea for new families during our Taster Day in Week 6—an excellent opportunity to make new connections.
I look forward to seeing many of you around campus as our end-of-year celebrations commence. Thank you for your ongoing support in making Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School such an exceptional place to learn and grow.

A Killer Performance: Clue: High School Edition
This year, our Stage 1 and 2 Creative Arts students brought the classic murder mystery play Clue: High School Edition to life on stage, transforming the Eastern Fleurieu School 7-12 Performing Arts Centre into the grand and mysterious Boddy Mansion. Based on the beloved board game and film, the production invited audiences to step into a world of intrigue, comedy, and farce where secrets, blackmail, and deceit run rampant, and the question on everyone’s lips was: “Who killed who, with what, and where?”
From the moment the lights dimmed, the cast transported us into a whirlwind of eccentric characters and absurd twists. Scarlet, Mustard, Plum, Peacock, White, Green, and the enigmatic butler Wadsworth carried the show with sharp timing, theatrical flair, and a deep understanding of the farcical tradition that underpins Clue. Clue demanded the entire cast to have a mastery of rapid-fire dialogue, precise comedic timing, and the ability to sustain an almost continual stage presence for the main cast. The mental and physical demands of this style of theatre were significant, yet students rose to the occasion, approaching the challenge with creativity, resilience, and enthusiasm, and in the process uncovered new strengths as developing theatre makers.
Equally impressive was the dedication of the crew, whose behind-the-scenes work ensured the success of every rehearsal and performance. The technically challenging script demanded precise timing in lighting and sound cues, which our students managed with remarkable focus and professionalism. From thunderclaps and carefully timed choreographed scenes to carefully balanced stage lighting, the technical team carried enormous responsibility and delivered flawlessly. Beyond this, the entire class collaborated as a united ensemble: proactive, adaptable, and willing to step into any role required. Their collective effort, whether on stage or off, was the driving force that brought the production to life and ensured its resounding success.
The success of Clue reflects more than just weeks of rehearsals; it is the culmination of collaboration, resilience, and creativity. I was filled with such pride, being able to sit front row and have students lead every aspect of the performance; a director’s dream. For some of these students, it was their 7th and final EFS production, but I am confident this will not be the last time we see these talented individuals on stage. I am so appreciative for the dedication of everyone involved, particularly that of our students for putting their heart and soul into the production.
Congratulations to all involved in this unforgettable production.

Year 6 Transition
The 7-12 Campus has an extended transition process, which involves small groups that come to visit the school. This gives students who may have anxiety a sense of feeling more at ease with the extra visits as they commence their new journey into high school.
Students are guided around the school by Carol Richardson, meeting the leaders, teachers, and staff who are available when visiting.
The students are shown areas where they will mostly be attending, in their classroom for their core subjects.
They also visit the practical curriculum areas of the school, which have proved to be very popular. The practical curriculum areas include Agriculture, Technology, and Performing Arts, to name a few. The students enjoy petting the animals and also receive a photo of themselves with the animals after the visit.
An extended transition booklet is given to the students for reference when they may need assistance in finding their way around the school and who they can talk to.
Feedback from the students, parents, and teachers has been very positive over the years, demonstrating that this program is very successful.

Year 9/10 Boys Statewide Basketball
On Monday, 15th September, the Year 9/10 boys headed to the Murray Bridge Basketball Stadium for their round of the Statewide competition. The boys worked hard in every game, showing determination, teamwork, and great spirit throughout the day.
Although they didn’t manage to notch up a win, losing all three of their matches, the way they supported each other and kept playing with energy and positivity was a real credit to them. The team represented the school proudly and gained valuable experience for the future.

Year 9/10 Girls Statewide Basketball
On Tuesday, 16th September, our Year 9/10 girls competed in the Statewide Basketball competition at the EFS R-6 campus against Unity College. After a close first quarter, the girls lifted their intensity, showed great teamwork, and ran away with a convincing 41–15 victory. This result sees them progress to the second round of competition against Tatachilla early next term.
A huge thank you goes to Year 11 students Darcie and Levi for their outstanding coaching, to Boyd and Jasper for umpiring, and to Jack for keeping the scores – an awesome team effort both on and off the court!

Year 10 Art and Design – Character and Concept Development
In Term 3, our Year 10 Art and Design students completed an incredible journey, taking their ideas from early brainstorming and experimentation through to fully resolved final artworks and designs.
Throughout the term, students explored a wide range of traditional and contemporary mediums, including Copic markers, fine liners, coloured pencils, and mixed media techniques. They developed skills in colour blending, texture rendering, and visual storytelling, learning how to bring depth and mood to their creative work.
In Visual Arts, students focused on character and concept development, using gesture and expression drawing, mood boards, and thumbnails to bring their unique characters to life. In Design, students worked to a design brief, creating outcomes that were purpose-driven and tailored to a specific audience. Both pathways encouraged students to research artists and designers, draw inspiration from professional practice, and reflect thoughtfully on their own creative decisions.
The completed artworks and designs are a testament to the students’ growth in both technical skill and conceptual thinking. Each piece demonstrates a clear connection between process and final product, showcasing a diverse range of styles, ideas, and approaches.
I am incredibly proud of the effort and dedication these Year 10s have shown. Their final works celebrate not only their creativity but also the mastery of new tools and techniques they’ve gained this semester.

Dessert Trends
The Year 12 Food and Hospitality students completed their final AT1 Practical Application, where they explored current dessert trends in preparation, presentation, and service within the Food and Hospitality industry. Each student designed and created a dessert that showcased either molecular gastronomy techniques or the use of Australian Native Foods.
The results were both innovative and visually impressive, highlighting the students’ ability to combine creativity with contemporary industry practices. From flavour experimentation to striking presentation, their desserts reflected a deep understanding of emerging culinary trends.

Year 12 Gratitude Dinner
The Year 12 Food and Hospitality students hosted the annual Staff Gratitude Dinner, as part of their AT2 Group Practical Application. Students were tasked with planning, preparing, and presenting a four-course restaurant-quality dinner inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. In these cultures, food is more than nourishment; it is a way of welcoming, sharing, and making every guest feel valued and included, and we hoped the guests experienced that same warmth and generosity through the dishes prepared by the students.
The event was a huge success, with students working tirelessly throughout the day to prepare their dishes and set up the dining room for staff. From the carefully crafted menu, attention to detail with the table setting, beautiful plating of dishes and the polished service, the night was a true reflection of the students’ growth and development over the year - not only in their culinary skills but in their confidence, teamwork, and professionalism.
This was reflected in the feedback received from the guests, including:
“The presentation was exceptional - each dish was plated with precision and colour, creating a vibrant, inviting table. The balance of textures, the thoughtful use of garnishes, and the Mediterranean-inspired styling made the menu feel both elegant and welcoming. It showed real attention to detail and elevated the dining experience. Every aspect absolutely blew me away. The beautiful, thoughtful and personalised words on the thank you cards, the speech at the beginning spoken so confidently, the service, food quality, atmosphere, and presentation. Every detail was considered - music, images on the tv screen, decorations, menu, thank yous, gifts, everything – just wow!"
The Gratitude Dinner was not just about showcasing food - it was also a chance for students to reflect on their journey, celebrate their achievements, and thank those who have supported them along the way.
As the Year 12s prepare to embark on the next stage of their lives, this event stands as a lasting reminder of what they can achieve when they work hard, support one another, and strive for excellence. As their teachers, we couldn’t have been prouder!

EFS Students Speak Up in 2025 Oratory Prize
On Wednesday, 10th September Eastern Fleurieu School hosted the seventh edition of the Ian Johnson Rotary Oratory Prize, an annual celebration of student voice, critical thinking and public speaking. The competition was established through the support of the Strathalbyn Rotary Club to honour the late Ian Johnson, whose dedication to service and community spirit continues to inspire.
The Oratory Prize challenges Year 11 students to research, craft and deliver a five-minute speech designed to inform, persuade, or entertain their audience, ideally doing all three. Students are encouraged to choose topics they are passionate about and to speak with clarity, creativity, and conviction.
Earlier in the year, every student presented in class, and topics ranged widely: from media regulation, youth crime and global conflict, to motivational explorations of gratitude, failure, connection and resilience, to cultural and media critiques of arthouse cinema, Disney, fashion, AI and reality TV. The breadth of ideas reflected the individuality, research and care each student brought to their work.
The finalists were selected based on the quality of their ideas, evidence, structure, and delivery, as well as their willingness to take on the daunting challenge of presenting to the entire year level and a panel of external judges. Seven students: Georgie, Mathew, Indi, Lochlan, Amelia, Ruby, Mackenzie presented six diverse and thought-provoking speeches, including the competition’s first ever paired presentation.
Our judging panel brought a wealth of experience and insight to the event. We were honoured to welcome Mr Rex Kielly AM, representing the Strathalbyn Rotary Club, who was joined by Ms Vanessa Coker, our Director of Secondary Education, and Mr Keegan Taylor, our Assistant Principal and Senior Years Leader.
Following the student presentations, the audience also had the privilege of hearing from Dr Jared Thomas, a Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges and the Adelaide University Coordinator of Indigenous Collections and Archives. Dr Thomas is also a prolific and award-winning writer of works across a range of genres and is the co-author, with NBA player Patty Mills, of the popular Game Day series, which has been widely praised for inspiring young readers through its themes of sport, perseverance, and cultural pride. Dr Thomas generously shared his reflections on the power of storytelling and representation as part of the event.
After much deliberation, the judging panel awarded the prize to Ruby and Mackenzie for their poetic and powerful paired presentation, which offered a moving exploration of the impact of suicide, community and hope. The runner-up prize was awarded to Lochlan for his engaging, skilfully structured and thought-provoking speech on the theme of doomsday.
Congratulations to all of this year’s finalists for their courage, craft and creativity in sharing their voices, and to the Strathalbyn Rotary Club for their ongoing support of this meaningful celebration of real-life skill development and student voice.

Year 10 Food and Hospitality
The Year 10 Food and Hospitality students recently hosted a beautiful High Tea for the residents from the Aspen Lifestyle Village in Strathalbyn. Working in small groups, students planned, prepared, and presented a range of sweet and savoury treats, while also providing table service and refreshments.
The morning was a wonderful and heart-warming experience for everyone involved. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the students’ hospitality, complimenting both the quality of the food and the thoughtful service. Many shared how special it was to be invited and are already eager to return for another visit!
This experience not only allowed students to showcase their culinary and service skills, but also highlighted the importance of community connection, teamwork, and kindness. Well done to all involved!

Year 10 & 11 Rock Climbing
This week our Year 10 and Year 11 Outdoor Education classes put their climbing skills to the test on real rock.
The Year 10’s kicked off the week with a trip to Onkaparinga Gorge on Monday, where they tackled challenging climbs surrounded by stunning views of the valley. The Year 11’s followed on Tuesday and Wednesday, heading to Morialta Conservation Park for technical climbs and teamwork.
Across both year levels, students showed determination, resilience, and great teamwork, where they were encouraging one another up the rock face and placing full trust in their groups while belaying. It was fantastic to see everyone step outside their comfort zones and support each other throughout the experience.

Year 11 Outdoor Education – Mountain Trail Riding at Kuitpo Forest
Our Year 11 Outdoor Education students took on the trails of Kuitpo Forest for a challenging and rewarding day of mountain trail riding. The group tackled a variety of tracks that tested their endurance, balance, and technical skills, all while enjoying the stunning forest scenery.
There were a few tough climbs and a couple of stacks along the way, but every student showed outstanding determination and resilience, supporting each other through each section of the ride. It was fantastic to see teamwork, encouragement, and plenty of smiles throughout the day.

Year 11 Mountain Bike Ride – Kuitpo Forest
Week 9 in Term 3, both year 11 Outdoor Ed classes participated in Mountain Bike Riding in Kuitpo Forest. The experience started with some basic safety and bike control games on the oval at school. The day riding in Kuitpo Forest consisted of pine forest access tracks, as well as specific mountain bike trails compromising narrow tracks with ups and downs and multiple obstacles that needed negotiating. At various times during the day, our instructor provided further skill training, enabling all students to complete all tracks safely, although there were some small spills, even by Ms Rothwell and Mr Doody!

Year 8 Maths - Egg Roulette
In maths, year 8 students have been learning about probability. As a bit of fun, we decided to try ‘Egg Roulette’ with 8C and 8D. In a carton of 12 eggs, 4 eggs were boiled and 8 were raw. Students opted to select an egg and crack it on their forehead to see if it was hard boiled or raw. Before each egg wash cracked, students discussed the probability of the egg being hard boiled.

The Rite Journey Camp
Across Term 3, Year nine students prepared for the biggest event of the Rite Journey Program: Solo Camp. This camp challenged students physically and mentally, though students also learnt unexpected things about themselves and their peers throughout the experience.
During Solo Camp students had to set up an area to sleep, find unusual ways to entertain themselves, and ration their food. This required high levels of resilience, determination, and courage.
Students also had the incredible opportunity to participate in multiple aquatics activities; stand up paddle boarding, sailing, small boat driving, and knee boarding. Each activity provided students with a unique set of skills and qualities, but all requiring teamwork.
Overall, the camp was a huge success, displaying all the hard-earned skills learnt throughout the year. A special thanks to all the teachers for organising such an amazing camp.

Inclusion and Wellbeing Team
EFS are very fortunate to have an extensive team of passionate educators providing Wellbeing supports to the young people in our school community. You or your child can get in contact with the Inclusion and Wellbeing team by contacting Student Services to book an appointment on 85362455 or you can send an email to the team at: DL.0796.Wellbeing@schools.sa.edu.au.
No Bullying Week – Standing Together
Our school proudly celebrated No Bullying Week with a range of activities that brought students together and promoted kindness and respect. The week kicked off with an info table at the bus stop, where students collected pledge ribbons and resources about taking a stand against bullying.
Highlights included a free BBQ, an inspiring Kids Helpline live stream with real stories and strategies for tackling bullying, and pledge posters at recess and lunch. These activities were supported by our Youth Workers and Flinders Uni social worker students, who helped spread the message right across the school.
It was a fantastic week of learning, sharing, and showing that at EFS we say no to bullying and yes to looking out for each other!

Social Work Placement Students
This semester we are fortunate to have three Social Work Placement Students joining the Inclusion and Wellbeing Team from Flinders University. Their presence brings a range of benefits to both the school community and the students themselves.
Working alongside our Youth Workers from the Inclusion and Wellbeing Team, the students will gain valuable insight into how wellbeing is supported in a school environment. They will have the opportunity to observe, learn and contribute to the way Youth Workers engage with young people, build trusting relationships, and provide practical supports that promote inclusion and connection.
If you see them in the yard they would love it if you say hello!

Wear It Purple Day
To celebrate Wear It Purple Day, the 7-12 Campus hosted a Student vs Staff Basketball Game during lunchtime on the 28th of August. The event was held on the Cola and was open for all students and staff to watch, support and participate in.
Wear It Purple Day is about promoting inclusion, respect, and visibility for LGBTQIA+ young people, and creating a school environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and supported for who they are. By holding a Student vs Staff basketball game, the aim was to:
- Bring together students and staff in a fun and positive environment.
 - Break down barriers between teachers and students through shared experiences.
 - Show that our school community values connection, teamwork, and acceptance.
 - Encourage high levels of student engagement with Wear It Purple Day activities.

A friendly basketball match creates excitement and draws a crowd, which means more people will be part of the conversation about what Wear It Purple Day represents. Sport is a universal way to connect people from different backgrounds and abilities, and this event can demonstrate allyship in a way that’s active, visible, and inclusive.
R U OK? Day
On Thursday, 11th September, our school came together to recognise R U OK? Day, an important initiative promoting positive conversations and student wellbeing. The day began with an information table at the front of the school, where students arriving on buses were greeted with wristbands, stickers, and homemade cupcakes kindly baked by one of our students in support of the event.
During Home Group, each class worked together on a poster activity, where students wrote responses to the question “What makes you feel OK?” on post it notes. These posters were later collected and displayed on the Youth Worker wall in the library, creating a vibrant showcase of positivity and encouragement.
Throughout the day, teachers shared a short R U OK? video in class, and additional classroom resources were available for further discussion. Staff and students also showed their support by wearing a splash of yellow, making the message visible across the school community.
The day was a reminder of the importance of checking in with one another, and that sometimes a simple conversation can make a big difference.

First Nations - SAASTA Year 12 Graduation Dinner
On Monday the 8th of September, our Year 12 SAASTA students, Ivan and Jaeleo, attended the SAASTA Graduation Dinner at Yipti Yartapuultiku. This event was a wonderful celebration of their hard work and achievements throughout their SAASTA journey. Students were acknowledged for their commitment to cultural leadership, academic success, and representing their school communities with pride.
First Nations - SAASTA Shield Excursion
On Tuesday the 9th and Wednesday the 10th of September, our senior SAASTA students, Ivan and Jaeleo, were invited to participate in the SAASTA Shield. Held over two days, this event brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across South Australia to compete in a variety of sporting competitions – this year including flag football and dodgeball. Beyond sport, the Shield promotes teamwork, leadership, and cultural pride. Our students represented Eastern Fleurieu with determination, energy, and strong collaboration both on and off the field.
First Nations - Cultural Immersion Day; Hosted by Mt Barker High School
Ten students from both the R-6 and 7-12 campuses joined peers from across the region at Mt Barker High School for this year's third Cultural Immersion Day. This special event provided opportunities for students to deepen their cultural understanding and connect with others through interactive workshops. Boys participated in a Yidaki workshop with David Booth, while girls took part in a Weaving workshop with Mel Koolmatrie. Both groups also enjoyed a Ngarrindjeri Language workshop with Kyla Mchughes. The day was a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural sharing and community connection, with our students proudly contributing to the activities.

Empowering Future Leaders: Youth Opportunities Program at EFS
For almost 20 years EFS has proudly partnered with Youth Opportunities, a not-for-profit group that runs personal leadership and wellbeing programs all across Australia. Each year, we offer two programs for our Year 10 students to help them build skills and habits that set them up for success.
The program runs one day a week offsite for the whole term and is open to up to 40 Year 10 students. Throughout the program, students take part in fun and meaningful activities that help them make positive choices, take charge of their lives, and plan for their futures. Plus, since the program is SACE approved, graduates earn 10 SACE points!
In 2025, we celebrated 19 students graduating in Term 1 and 16 students in Term 3. Congratulations to all our graduates for their hard work and commitment!
Looking ahead, information sessions for the 2026 program will be held with Year 9 students at the end of this term. Interested students are encouraged to attend and complete an application form.
We look forward to continuing this rewarding partnership and supporting our students on their journey to becoming confident, capable leaders.

Jigsaws
The jigsaws have become so popular we now have 2 being solved at any one time. Thus why so many have been solved since the last newsletter! One group work on one during Home Group every morning and 2 are here when they finished the jigsaw of Sydney Harbour.
Reading
It has been great to regularly see students borrowing books while in their English classes. Statistics show regularly reading not only improves literacy, it also improves empathy for others.
